Coming up..Science Week

Science Week Launch Success!

On Thursday 7th May, 421 pupils from St Mary’s, took home a plant pot and some poppy seeds to plant at home, nurture and grow. The children will then bring in their poppy plant during our Science Week 8th – 12th June, to plant in our butterfly garden. Thank you to all our parents and carers for your support.

The Science week ‘Habitats and Improving our School Environment’ promises to be an exciting week of trips out to our local area, visitors into school, and creative activities to help improve our school environment.

Here is a slice of what there is to come…

BIG DIG! SMOG (garden) area and pond area – Parents, staff and children are invited to help tidy up these areas, and make them look fantastic!

Zoo Lab – Hands on experience with wild animals with the Zoo Lab team! Children will learn about animal’s habitats, diet and lifecycles; and they will use their senses to discover the animal’s shape and form.

Compost Workshop – Katy Salter, Environment Engagement Officer, will help the children discover how our fruit scraps and garden waste can be turned into compost.

Scarecrow making afternoon – Parents are invited to help the Foundation Stage children make scarecrows out of recycled materials.

RSPB Visitor – Presentation from a RSPB volunteer, Phyl England, about how we can attract birds into our gardens and school environment.

Den Building – Children will create amazing dens in our woodland areas with our expert, Luke Winters, from Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre.

Nature’s Way for Kids – Workshop lead by Cath Morford. The children will create a butterfly garden and make hairy caterpillars!

Birds of Prey – Children will experience birds of prey and reptiles close up, with the ‘Liberty’s Owl, Raptor and Reptile’ team.

Bee Association – Presentation from a Dorset Bee Keepers Association volunteer, Helen Edbrock, on bee keeping, pollination and the importance of bees to our school and garden environments.

Dorset Wildlife Trust – Workshop lead by Nicki Hoar. The children will learn about butterflies and make butterfly feeders.

Information on our trips out will follow.
