Hope FM Broadcast

Our trip to the radio station

On Wednesday 18th of June, Georgios and us (Poppy and Josmi) went to the Hope FM radio station to broadcast live. We set off on the minibus, early in the morning, not having any time to prepare. It took about 20 minutes to get there. Soon, we entered a building called YMCA. It’s not the song but there is a short story behind it.

170 years ago, a man called George Williams was careless, thoughtless and even godless. But at the age of 16 life changed for him and he was a completely different man. He was a Christian! A couple of years later, George found a job at Beales, where there were 130 men working. Time was tight though. Work started at 8am and ended at 8pm and they only had a 20 minute break. There were about 4 men sharing a miniature room and life was tough. But George opposed this. So he married the bosses’ daughter; it was the only way to get his say. He told the boss his problems and that’s how it was called The Young Men’s Christian Association.

The radio man, Chris, was very friendly and didn’t care if we made any mistakes. At first you can get a bit nervous but after the first break you just answer his questions and you just relax. As well as advertising our summer fayre, we talked about what were currently doing in yr6.

Nowadays, the YMCA has over 58 million members in 119 countries worldwide! Since it was established, YMCA has changed lives of many young children all over the UK. In the same building we went to there was about 50 homeless people living there for free.

The trip was a great experience and we totally recommend it for years to come as an opportunity never to miss.
