My Roman Shield

My Roman Shield by Jackius Sprattius

I went home thinking that it would be a good idea to make a Roman shield for our lesson on the Romans.  So I asked my Dad if I could have some cardboard and borrow some paints to make my amazing shield.  During the weekend I spent a long time making my shield to bring into school.  It is made of cardboard, tinfoil, grey paint and a plastic bowl which I found lying around in the house.

Firstly, I cut out the cardboard.  My Dad helped me by using a Stanley knife (which has a razor sharp edge) to cut out the main shield shape.  Secondly, I added the outline using a marker pen because it does not rub off.  Next, I applied the tin foil so it would look like the metal armoured plates of a genuine Roman shield.  Finally, I added the paints and the bowl as well. I felt like it went really well and I knew the teachers would like it a lot.

After testing it for a bit, I realised that I needed two pieces of wood to nail onto the back of my shield to prevent it from bending.  Dad helped me by nailing the wood to the back of the shield; this made it much more stable.

When I brought it into school, I showed it to Mr. Howard and he was really impressed.  So we took some photos and now you are reading about it on the school website - how brilliant!
