World's Largest Lesson

St Mary's KS2 pupils took part in UNICEF's World's Largest Lesson, along with schools in more than 160 countries, raising awareness of their 17 Global Goals for sustainable development.

St Mary's pupils learned about these goals in their French language lessons, through French reading and listening tasks, using Unicef's animation, which you can see here and which is also available in 15 other languages! Our pupils, along with 500 million children, from Jamaica to the Philippines, China to Ukraine,  learned about problems facing our planet. The Prime Minister urged British schools to get involved and we did!

From a language perspective, the opportunity to broaden our children's awareness of languages spoken throughout the world and to see their growing confidence in interpreting longer "chunks" of French was amazing.

The pupils also noticed how well resourced our schools are, compared to some others, while looking at the UNICEF Twitter feed, from participating schools, including Malala's online video lessons in a refugee camp.

Pupils drew cartoons of themselves as superheroes, choosing an action or skill they could use to make a change.

We realised how fortunate we are in comparison and the children took action on Friday, by donating to Cafod and wearing bright clothes to school. You can see our "tweets" in the Quick Links section.  Year 3 was especially excited to think so many children could see their superhero cartoons!

We also hope to share our thoughts with our French partner school in Brittany.
