Eco-Club

Welcome to the St Mary's School Eco-Club

On Tuesday, Eco and SMOG Club invited Poole Grammar School to plant poppy seeds with us.

We were proud to show them to our new poppy garden we made at the front of the school.

In commemoration of the soldiers, we laid a beautiful poppy wreath, designed by the Foundation Children, on a cross that Mr Rolston made for us. We then said a special Poppy prayer as we thought about Christopher Gilbert Durant, who is a soldier who attended St Mary’s.

The staff at Poole Grammar School described the children who attended as ‘marvellous’ and ‘very thoughtful’. Our teachers couldn’t be prouder of how they represented our school in such a respectful and polite manner.

We hope that you will be able to see our poppies growing soon.

Eco and SMOG Trip to Poole Grammar School

Members of Eco and SMOG club were invited to Poole Grammar School for special Green Week activities.

First of all, we got to plant some vegetables. These will be used in the school canteen at Poole Grammar School. We planted; tomatoes, courgettes and peppers. Yum!

Next, we went to a special War Ceremony where we planted and watered poppy seeds. We learnt why poppies are used to remember those who died in the war. We laid down a special poppy wreath and respectfully thought about all who died at war.

It was a brilliant afternoon and Eco Club represented St. Mary’s very well. We are very grateful to the staff and students at Poole Grammar who organised these activities.

Well done Eco and SMOG Club - Keep up the great work!

Renewable Energies

This term, Eco-club had a special visitor. Mark Hancock (an engineer in renewable energies) came to speak to us about Climate Change. He used Duplo Lego as part of a talk to demonstrate how much of an impact different activities and countries are having on our carbon footprint.

Eco-Club (and Mrs Mills and Miss Ramsden!) learnt a lots about our carbon footprint and why we do all things Eco.

Mark really enjoyed his visit and said, "It was a privilege to talk with such lively and interested children about an important topic.”

As part of Waste Week, Eco Club presented the information they had learnt to other children in the school. It was great!

Eco Warriors

In Eco-Club, the Eco Warriors have the very important job of emptying the recycling bins. They go round to all the classes and put the recycling in the right bins. Well done Eco Warriors - all the teachers are very grateful!

We are a group of children dedicated to improving and raising awareness of our school's environmental performance, inside and out! Our committee meets once a week at lunchtime.

This is a very popular club. Children that are interested in getting involved need to see Mrs Mills.

The SMOG (St Mary’s Organic Gardening) Club visited Poole Grammar school to work with staff to plant seeds as part of their ‘Green Week’. The children planted and labelled over 150 vegetable seeds!

The pots were then placed in the greenhouse. Once they have grown bigger, one vegetable plant will be given to each Year 6 student during their transition day at Poole Grammar School. The students will nurture their plant over the Summer holidays, create a recipe to use their vegetable in, cook their recipe, then eat it and share it with others at school.
