Ukulele - Week 9

Hear what we have been up to!

Ukulele - Week 8

Wow! The children in years 3&4 have been working so hard over the last few weeks on their ukulele playing. Having missed a few lessons, Mrs Wilson came back to hear them confidently changing between chords and playing a melody using single strings. Years 3&4 can now play the chords of Aminor, A7, C major and Fadd9. Fabulous work!
Ukulele - Week 5

At St. Mary’s we are fortunate to have a class set of ukuleles. As you can see from the picture, we are a colourful ukulele band! Today we rehearsed our tune using the G, C and E strings. We then learnt the chord of A7 and played a blues chord structure in partnership with Mr Palmer. It sounded great!

Ukulele – Week 4

Today we revisited the tune that we learnt last week using the strings of G, C and E. We then added an introduction to the song by adding the chords of C and F add 9. We also practised changing between the two chords of F and Am. It’s sounding really good!

Ukulele – Week 3

This week we learnt and practised the ‘upstrum’ technique on our ukuleles. We also revisited the chords of C major and A minor and played them together. We then learnt a simple tune by plucking the strings and played it in time to a drumbeat. Years 3 and 4 are sounding great after just 3 weeks of tuition!

Week 2 - Ukulele Club

Today years 3 & 4 had their second ukulele lesson with Mr Palmer. We revisited the chords of C major and A minor and remembered how to strum the ukulele correctly. (Index finger with your nail). We then went on to learn how to read chord diagrams and learnt to play a new chord, F major.

Top tip: you can remember the names of the strings using this rhyme. G-C-E-A.

Ukulele Club - NEW!

Today we welcomed Rob Palmer from SoundStorm to teach Years 3 and 4 the ukulele for the summer- term. In our first session, we learnt about the different parts of the ukulele and how to strum correctly. We even played the chords C major and A minor in time to a drum beat. We can’t wait for next week!

Samba Workshop

We welcomed Daniel Priest from SoundStorm Music Hub to St. Mary’s to teach Years 3, 4 & 5 about Samba.  Firstly we learnt about the different instruments in a Samba orchestra (or Bateria as it is known in Brazil), and their role in the music.  Next, we had a go at drumming different rhythm patterns and putting them together to create a groove.  It was great fun and we learnt a lot.
